Folk Process: Oil Keeps Leaking

Here's one more exercise in Folk Process about the BP oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Like the first song I posted, this one may be sung as a round. Have fun!

Oil Keeps Leaking
by Clayton A. Peak
(tune: Frere Jacques)

Oil keeps leaking
Oil keeps leaking
In the Gulf
In the Gulf
Everything is dying
Everything is dying
What a shame
What a shame

Folk Process: The Oil in the Gulf

I hope you enjoyed yesterday's post as I shared a song I had "written" about the BP oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Here's another one. I've set it to a familiar children's song: "The wheels on the bus go round and round." Perhaps you've been on a long car trip where you've sung verse after verse after verse! My version here works the same way. So once again, sing this song, share it with the kids, and have fun!

The Oil in the Gulf
by Clayton A. Peak
(tune: The Wheels on the Bus)

The oil in the Gulf goes gush, gush, gush
gush, gush, gush, gush, gush, gush
The oil in the Gulf goes gush, gush, gush
Each and every day.

The plants in the Gulf go yuck, yuck, yuck...

The fish in the Gulf go choke, choke, choke...

The shore by the Gulf is gross, gross, gross...

The bureaucrats sit and go hmm, hmm, hmm...

Folk Process: Oil, Oil

Folk Process: the act of reworking an old song, often with the intent of addressing a contemporary situation.

Long before Randy Newman wrote Burn On about the infamous Cuyahoga River fire of 1969, folk musicians have been writing new songs and adapting old songs to address various disasters and tragic events taking place in the world. So in response to the recent BO oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, I've been engaging in a little folk process myself.

My first effort is a round, sung to the old tune of Rose, Rose. I invite you to sing this song, teach it to your kids, sing it around the campfire, etc., and have fun!

Oil, Oil
by Clayton A. Peak
(tune: Rose, Rose)

Oil, oil, oil, oil,
Keeps on leaking into the Gulf
Everything is getting coated
It's a big mess

(repeat ad naseum)

FTV: Hitch on Driving

FTV = From The Vault [Of Quotations]

The last time I got a traffic ticket, I almost told this one to the judge. Maybe it's a good thing I didn't!

"I think there is nothing more terrifying than getting a traffic ticket. I don't drive a car for the simple reason that if you don't drive, you can't get a ticket."
—Sir Alfred Hitchcock

From The Vault: Quotations

Some of you know that I [Clayton] have a fondness for quotations. To make a point or illustrate an idea, I will frequently quote "someone". It could be someone who lived a long time ago, or someone still alive today. It may be someone well-known or obscure. No matter who it is, I enjoy quoting others. I write down good quotes whenever I come across them. I also have many tucked away in my mind. I draw quotes from a variety of sources: poetry, music, literature, movies, plays, speeches, news reports, and even casual conversations. If you look at my Facebook page, under the section titled "Favorite Quotations," you'll see a lengthy list of favorite quotes--and that is just a start! In many ways, I feel a kinship to John Bartlett who compiled the well-loved book Bartlett's Familiar Quotations.

It occurred to me recently that I should not be hiding my light beneath a bushel. I should be sharing these quotes with others. It's time for me to open the vault.

So I've created a new series here at The Dunger Peak: "From The Vault" (abbreviated "FTV"). From time-to-time I will post a quotation from the vault. It may be something new, old, familiar, or obscure. It may be comforting, entertaining, disturbing, or thought-provoking. Just because I pass along a quotation doesn't necessarily mean I agree or condone the statement. Sometimes we learn just as much (and maybe even more) from the folks with whom we disagree. No matter what your point of view, I hope you will read and appreciate these quotations "From The Vault".

Here's one to get us started (and it is certainly quite appropriate for this particular blog entry):

"Quote as often as possible. It saves on original thinking."
--C. S. Lewis
